Das St\u00e4dchten war einst Zentrum des Schieferbergbaus und hatte zeitweise \u00fcber 12.000 Einwohner. Heute sind es noch knapp 5.000, von denen etwa 80% Walisisch sprechen. Die Hochphase des Bergbaus war in den 1860er- und 1870er Jahren, im 20. Jahrhundert setzte der Niedergang ein und 1970 wurde die letzte Mine geschlossen. Heute lebt die Stadt vor allem vom Tourismus. Hier ist der Bahnhof der St\u00e4dtchens zu sehen.
